How are shaped car models made of clay?

Ford has shown to Motorpasión how they make clay patterns for future real vehicles.

Sculptors shape the model from the first design created by specialists. This is the best way for designers to see and observe shade and possible touch.

First step for the creation in clay starts by placing a solid structure made of wood or foam, which is shaped through the 3D virtual design.

This is a special clay, as it contains 70% of wax. No water is used to shape, but hot.

Some elastic plastic sheets ( DI-NOC) are placed finally to give the colour touch.

It lasts around one week to get the finished prototype. It can weight about 2 tons, but it’ s worth.

Finally production team have a proper and approved design thanks to this process.

As it is said - one picture worth one thousand words - we show you video for you to delight in this artisan work.
